How We Age: Best Skincare Devices for Your 20s

Skincare • 14 May 2019

Your twenties are the years that are associated with late nights, partying and sun soaked holidays with friends, meaning that your skincare routine can often take a back seat. Whilst the 20-something version of you may take your perfect skin for granted, it’s true that the damage that you do in your 20s will show up later in life.

When speaking to Vogue earlier this year, Miami-based dermatologist, Alicia Barba, explained: “The damage you do in your 20s is going to show up in your 30s, 40s, and 50s. It’s a cumulative effect; things will come back to haunt you.”

“The first signs of sun damage do generally show up in your 30s, as your skin’s reparative abilities begin to weaken - thin mild brown spots, crow’s-feet and dull skin. But it’s important to remember that those changes are actually a reflection of past behaviour.”

How should you expect your skin to change in your 20s?

Generally speaking, your skin in your 20s should be reasonably good. However if you think you’re immune from the signs of ageing during this decade, you’d be wrong.

From the age of 20, your skin produces 1% less of Collagen each year. By the time you reach your mid-20s, this accelerates and the cells that once turned over very quickly begin to slow down significantly.

This means that dead skin cells can build up on the surface, causing discoloration and lack of elasticity.

Key changes to your skin in your 20s include:

  • Tiny fine lines may begin to appear in your mid to late twenties
  • Creases and dark circles may appear under the eyes
  • May start to lose its elasticity and its ‘glow’
  • Oil production may start to reduce, meaning skin may become slightly drier

Whilst you may start to see signs of ageing in your 20s, this decade is most about creating good habits for the future.

What can I do about it? What are the best devices to use for 20-something skin?

Exfoliate

Exfoliating the skin rids it of the buildup of dead skin cells - which can be responsible for a dull or lacklustre complexion. We recommend using the latest 5-in-1 Clarisonic Mia Smart Device with the all-new Clarisonic Exfoliating Brush Head.

Made from a soft and hygienic silicone, it works with the device’s sonic technology to gently but effectively remove dead skin cells, revealing a suitably glowing complexion and a smooth base that will help your skincare products to absorb much better.

Our Resident Product Expert, Heather Talbot explains: “Exfoliating helps keep the skin looking fresh and dewy and it helps you to get the most of your skincare. Your skin is often at its best in your 20s and exfoliating creates a smooth base for make-up.”

Invest in an Anti-Ageing Device

As the saying goes, prevention is better than the cure and it’s never too early to invest in an effective anti-ageing device.

If you’re looking for a device that can do it all, we’d recommend the ZIIP Beauty Nano Current Facial Skincare Device. Loved by A-listers such as Kim Kardashian and Mandy Moore, this palm-sized device has been getting love from the editorial hotshots at the likes of ELLE, Allure and Cosmopolitan.

Created by a team of scientists, the device uses small, energetic vibrations to gently re-energise your skin. Connecting to an app on your phone, it gives you 8 varying routines - each with a video to guide you through how to do them.

From energising your skin to treating pimples and breakouts, the ZIIP device can do it all. Plus, it will last you right through to your later years.

Sleep

Whilst your younger years often mean late nights and lots of partying, lack of sleep over a long period of time can show on your skin.

Whilst the amount of sleep you need changes person to person, you should aim to have around 8 hours a night. When we don’t get enough sleep, your cortisol levels (known as the stress hormone) go up meaning you’ll be prone to breakouts and skin inflammation.

Heather explains: “Sleep is when your body does most of its repairing and when your cells renew - meaning it’s crucial you get quality snooze time.”

Luxury brands such as Slip and Skin Laundry has developed a whole plethora of products to help you get your best night’s sleep yet. Made from 100% pure mulberry silk, this luxurious Slip Pure Sleep Mask is super kind to your skin whilst giving you a completely uninterrupted night’s sleep.
